To elaborate 'Often doesn't work well' - I fairly regularly get the message that OCR cannot be done on a page, sometimes editing can't be done because the font can't be found and lately that software wouldn't even open pdf files (although Preview did just fine). Acrobats message was that I need to upgrade to a newer version.
Well, I have no intentions of digging that deep into my pockets to get another copy of Acrobat.
I use Preview wherever I can, but I need these additional capabilities;
1. OCR - for various languages
2. Text Editing
3. Conversion to Word (and such) while retaining formatting
4. Means to control quality of images when converting from png or tiff to pdf
Acrobat Pro 9 doesn't do a consistent good job with any of the four items
PDF Editors I have come across are:
PDF Expert
PDFpen
PDFelement
ABBYY FineReader
PhantomPDF (Cloud based)
Power PDF Standard
PDF Studio for Mac
Movavi PDF Editor 3
PDF Editor 6 pro (replaced by PDF element 7?)
Do people have experience with any of those and could recommend them - specifically for the tasks that I need.
Or recommend against any or add any that I might be missing.
Price is a consideration, but not the primary one
